Empire October 1991 - Part II (Review)
After reading this review on 'Only the Lonely' by Angie Errigo I come to the conclusion that Mrs. Errigo only reviewed this movie on base of it's story. There's no word on the fine acting of the cast.
Please don't let this review fool you, 'Only the Lonely' is a heartwarming romantic comedy and is much better than a lot of other romantic "comedies". This movie is not a cliché, it's reality. It's about real feelings and is inspired by people who were in the same situation. Therefore, the movie can't be uninspired. Unless you think life is a cliché itself.
Why is John's character referred to as a slob in this review? He's a nice and decent guy, who works as a cop. O, wait a minute... is it because he's heavy? Now that's not sweet, but it is simple and uninspired....
What? It gave it 2 stars?? Now, I ain't seen the movie yet, but I know for sure that anything that has John Candy in it deserves a rating far far higher than 2 stars.
ReplyDeleteWait till you see the movie, then you will be flabbergasted it only got two stars!
ReplyDeleteI've always thought Only The Lonely was a lovely little film. In fact, I think it's one of John Candy's best performances, second only to his Del Griffith in Planes Trains and Automobiles. Having grown up in an Irish-Catholic family (albeit in New York, not Chicago) I can assure you that the portrayal of the various characters attitudes and behavior is spot on. An overlooked little gem.
ReplyDeleteThanks for your message, Vonbork. Yes, this movie is an overlooked gem. One of John's best movies!
ReplyDeleteEven though I personally haven't seen the movie, I love John Candy- he's one of my favourites. And I do find it shocking that they would give a movie of his two stars.
ReplyDeleteThanks for your comment, Nathan. You'll find it especially shocking when you see this movie.
ReplyDeleteYou're welcome. I'm a big JC fan myself.
ReplyDeleteI mention him quite a lot on my blog.
My brother and I got to work with him in the early 80's, we got to meet him as well.
Here's the link to it, you should visit it sometime.

Hi Nathan. I have visited your blog and became a follower. Sorry for not posting anything on your blog yet. Will do though.
ReplyDeleteThat's alright. I got the movie Only The Lonely on dvd for my birthday last year, i got Wagon's East as well and for christmas i got the dvd of Canadian Bacon.
ReplyDeleteI really think 'Only The Lonely' is on par with 'PTA' and 'Uncle Buck'. I love it!
ReplyDelete'Wagons East' is not so loveable. And I really hate the blunt and dirty jokes in it. There shouldn't be place for things like that in a John Candy movie.
'Canadian Bacon' is a rather strange movie. But not bad at all. John has a few funny moments, but he's pretty wasted. Being filmed in the fall of 1993, it wasn't released until 1995.
John was in pretty bad shape when he made Wagons East and Canadian Bacon.
ReplyDeleteSome sources state he was in the middle of reading the script Atuk based on the novella about the eskimo who moves to the big city.
That screenplay is cursed I believe.
O yes, I read about the Atuk script somewhere. I don't remember though what the source was.
ReplyDeleteI really do love this movie.
ReplyDeleteOnce Upon A Crime and Nothing But Trouble aren't too bad either - i like both of them.
Sure NBT is weird, but it's supposed to be like that - it's a black horror comedy.
It's also become a cult classic like Rocky Horror and the Evil Dead movies.
